OK friends, we have (or rather our tree has) a serious problem and don't know what to think or do. Our linden tree (known in Czech as a 'lipa' or in French as a 'tilleulle' or you Brits call it a 'lime tree' though I absolutely cannot figure that out) is losing leaves. No, not just a few here and there...it is literally crying leaves. Every day we collect hundreds of them. It is just really sad and the only reason we can figure for this is that when the leaves were starting to come out, we got hit by a cold spell and it even snowed and the temps went under freezing. Otherwise, we don't know what is causing it. You might think, oh, well, it is just a tree, but it isn't. This is a nearly 200 year old tree!!
See it? You are looking at the top part of it behind me...those big main branches are so big neither Mom nor Dad could put their arms around them. It is a big, old tree..and it is going prematurely bald. Any of you smart gardeners out there have any ideas???? Help!!

We don't know the reason...Could it be a parasite of some sort? A disease? Could it just be at the natural end of its lifespan? What a magnificent Elder Tree. There's no such thing as "just" a tree, at least not to our mom.
Maybe there is a tree doctor who can diagnose its problem. They have them here - it's a speciality gardener who knows about trees and diseases. I hope it's not some parasite, like one of our trees had - it died and had to be cut down.
We don't know the reason either. But what an awesome tree ~ maybe yoor mom should telephone a garden centre and ask advice. It would be such a pity of the ancient tree went to the Bridge. Maybe there is some treatment to save it?
In France, I'd say no water enough. But you had rain..Yes , ask a real gardener, and try to care this beautyful old boy. It deserves it!
What a great tree! Do yous guys ever try to climb it? Me don't know about trees, so I don't know why its bgoing bald.

That is such a wonderful tree - we can't believe how big it is. We hope that it isn't anything serious and that it is just that cold that made it loose the leaves. We just don't know much about gardening, and even less about trees.

All trees are sacred and special. We call a tree surgeon if one of our special trees is in trouble. Even Jonesie can't figure that out on her own. She's smart enough to know when to call for help. Our weeping willow tree is ancient and we have a specialist come and check it out every few years.

What a glorious tree!
Here in the northeast US we have something called winter moth. It has my crabapple tree dropping its leaves in midsummer if I don't spray for it in February or March. The Wiki article says it's related to a bug that goes after Linden trees.

So, maybe that's your problem.
This hasn't killed my tree but the arborist says it stresses it and would eventually kill it.
We think you should call the arborist.
