Tiny: Here it is, Gardening Thursday and as we are members of the Society of Feline Gardeners (see Cory Cat Blog for more info) we are SUPPOSED to be working in the garden...

Lautrec: Hmmmmmm...

Tiny: Look at Lolo-boy... you see what he's doing? DAYDREAMING!!

Lautrec: Hey!! Whoa!! That is just not true...I am not daydreaming...I'm checking my eyelids for holes...really!! Yeah, that and I'm listening to Rusty talk about all the slugs and snails he has seen in our garden after we got all that rain. You should listen to Rusty sometimes...he's a smart guy!

Tiny: Yeah, sure....as if Rusty could talk

Lautrec: Well Smarty-Tiny, Rusty just told me that the plant surrounding him - which he says is called 'Campsis radicans'* - has flowered for the first time!!

Look at those flowers...they look like orange trumpets - TOOOT TOOO DOOO!!!

The Trumpet vine or Trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans), also known as "Cow itch vine" and (in horticulture) as "hummingbird vine", is a large and vigorous woody vine of the family Bignoniaceae, notable for its showy trumpet-shaped flowers. It is native to woodlands of thesoutheastern United States, but is a popular garden perennial plant across much of the country as some cultivars are hardy to as low as -30°F/-34°C.

The leaves are opposite, ovate, pinnate, 3–10 cm long, and emerald green when new, maturing into a dark green. The flowers come in terminal cymes of 4–12, orange to red in color with a yellowish throat, and generally appear after several months of warm weather. The plant as a whole may grow to 10 meters in height.

The flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds, and many types of birds like to nest in the dense foliage. The flowers are followed by large seed pods. As these mature, they dry and split. Hundreds of thin, brown, paper-like seeds are released. These are easily grown when stratified.

The vigor of the trumpet vine should not be underestimated. In warm weather, it puts out huge numbers of tendrils that grab onto every available surface, and eventually expand into heavy woody stems several centimeters in diameter. It grows well on arbors, fences, telephone poles, and trees, although it may dismember them in the process. Ruthless pruning is recommended. Outside of its native range this species has the potential to be highly invasive, even as far north as New England. The trumpet vine thrives in many places in southern Canada as well.

Alternate scientific names have included Bignonia radicans and Tecoma radicans.

'Cheese' she says to me and sticks out a lovely, gooey chunk of a perfectly ripe, room-temperature camembert and NATURALLY, I went for it...and just at that moment the flashy beast blinked at me. Dilemma. Do I continue to go for the cheese and ignore ol' flashy beast boy or do I leave the scene in a huff.

Yeah, you guessed it...I went for the cheese...I AM NO FOOL!!

Nom, nom...oh, I think I managed to flick some up by my ear...good thing I have an extra long tongue!!

Cheese is good!!!

A lot of blogs are written by cats or dogs, but behind each of them, there is also a human to help with the difficult stuff. There are other blogs that are written purely by humans. This award is for the humans since often on cat and dog blogs, we hear a lot about the furry friends, but little about their slaves (the humans in their lives). Thank you Franklin, Dobby and Tasha (and their human!) at Mishkat! Hey guys, Lautrec is so happy that there are other gardening kitties...he would love to have a big garden party for all of you and maybe find a way to share seeds or garden advice...anyone have any suggestions?

B. Share 7 things about yourself:

1. I started out studying metallurgy my first year in college, but was so bored by it that I switched to what I had always loved....art.

2. Though I lived the first half of my life in America (not including the 2 years in China) and the second half in Europe, I feel more at home in Europe.

3. I think Lautrec is the reincarnation of my first Siamese cat Lao'tza. The first time Lautrec and I met, he rolled onto my feet and looked up at me as if to say: 'I am so happy to be back!'.

4. I think Tiny is capable of healing both humans and other animals. I thought maybe I was crazy to think this, but since have learned that other people believe that animals have healing capabilities.

5. I am the youngest of 7 children, but have no children of my own...except my beloved cats and all the birds and other animals that want to call my garden home! Oh yes, and the 10 fish in our pond - yes, they each have a name!!

6. I am absolutely happy spending all my free-time at our country house puttering around inside the house (usually baking!) or outside (usually picking weeds or moving plants around!) and/or taking walks in the forest around our house.

7. Since I also live in Prague, I have literally spent hundreds of hours walking around the city photographing odd or unusual things (i.e. I have a blog dedicated to doors in Prague - thedoorhunter - because I like doors and like to 'hunt' them). Besides doors, I love to look for interesting shadows, reflections, good graphitti, interesting man-hole covers and for the interesting benches for my friend Malyss' blog about benches.

Flying Things and Dreams of Flying

OK, normally today would be a gardening day with the Society of Feline Gardeners (SOFG), but as we had so much rain and lots of bean visits, Tiny and I weren't able to get out and do some gardening so we will have to share some other pictures with you.

Flying things (butterflies and moths)

I love to watch butterflies and I THINK I would like to catch them and feel them in my mouth, but Mom won't let me. Tiny said she did once - in secret - but that they aren't very tasty.

Then there is this guy...I guess being that he is a moth, he isn't interested in flowers...but hey dude, wood?

That's all I have from our garden, but here are some pictures Mom took recently while on one of her walks in our neighborhood (she wanted to show some of the bean visitors these mushroom-shaped rocks/cliffs that are in the forest). Tiny and I had to stay home.

Dreams of Flying

Maybe it was a good thing we had to stay home since these places look kinda scarey though I have to admit that these rocks could be an excellent place to see if I can fly...I bet if I could climb onto one of them and jump off I would be able to fly above the trees and with the birds and could maybe even go sit on a flower like the little butterflies above do!! Aw, c'mon! Don't laugh! I can't believe I'm the only cat who dreams of flying!

(Note from Mom: Sorry Lautrec honey, but I don't think you would fly...at least not like a bird or butterfly. Perhaps it is best if you only try flying in your dreams - it is waaaay safer there than anywhere else!)

Normally, I'm an easy-going, happy cat, but the weather has been so dang rotten lately (rain, rain and more rain!) that I woke up in a crabby mood this morning. THEN, to top it off, the flashy beast came out and that really annoyed me.

Mom couldn't help but notice my crabbiness and offered to cheer me up. I was thinking: 'How can she cheer me up if she can't make the rain go away?'...then she showed me this picture.

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw it!! I love how that bumblebee is looking right into the camera!! He's sooo funny!! Hey! It worked! I don't feel so crabby anymore!!

Thursday Gardening!!

Hello! Lautrec here...we have had a TON of rain lately and when we get a lot of rain in the summer, a lot of these pop up in our garden:

Something else also loves the rain and damp...and the mushrooms...these:

Thankfully, this guy (below) and his buddies like to eat the above 'yucks' ... this guy might not eat very many this summer, I'm sure he will in a couple of years!

(He was as big as my thumb!)

Ah, and there are also these fellas that like to eat the 'yucks':

(Isn't he magnificent?! His underside is a fluorescent green!!)

I especially like to uncover nice surprises like frogs and lizards even if I'm not allowed to eat them. They are so cute!!

Lolo Lundi /Lolo Monday

Yeah, yeah, yeah...OK, I just finished eating my dinner and I hadn't yet had the time to wash my face when Mom just HAD to take a picture of me. Why? I DON'T KNOW!! She kept saying something about how cute I am after I eat because my nose it all wet. Duh!! Of course my nose is wet! I'm a cat!! But if she is talking about that wet spot above my nose, well, that is just plain not fair...she didn't give me time to make myself presentable.

How am I going to face the world now? Oh, I feel so ashamed.

P.S. These pictures are kinda funny because they make it look as though I have REALLY TINY PAWS and a REALLY BIG HEAD!! Hahaha!!
