Gardening Thursday

We recently found out about the Society of Feline Gardeners and were so happy to meet other gardening kittehs. Thanks to Jonesie over at Cory Cat Blog, we can now be members of a gardening club...we LOVE gardening!

Our story this week is about larva (larvi?) that Mom found living in the ground below the Blue Spruce. These ugly creatures live about an inch below the surface and you might never know they are there unless you dig up the ground because they are just waiting to turn into weird flying bugs in the summer (in the summer, after they have become bugs, they come crawling out of holes in the ground and noisily fly away). Sometimes we see blackbirds digging holes in the ground and pulling them out, but the other day, Mom was digging in the flowerbed and she found a whole bunch of them (that she later gave to the koi). We, of course, had to come and make sure that they were of no danger to her.

I only smelled them and touched them with the tips of my toes.
Lautrec actually put one in his mouth, but didn't eat it. EEEEWWWWW!!!

Ack. Mama can't believe you put one in your mouth, Lautrec, but I say go for it! At first, it was cute because you were just looking on over Tiny's shoulder. I also like how Tiny gingerly puts her paw on them. You two make great gardening cats!

Hurry and rinse your mouth out with tuna juice! Those larvae (Mommy had three years of Latin)are truly disgusting! Just how BIG are the insects that those things turn into?

Yuck-O! They are much bigger than I imagined! I would also hate to see what they turn into!

Wow those are huge! You are both very brave to investigate them because they look gross - and your mom was brave to dig them up. And it was very nice of her to share them with the Koi - we had no idea koi would eat things like that.
