Gardening Thursday

Hi there!! As we all know, Fall is officially here. And we of the gardening variety and members of SOFG (for more information and to become a member, please visit Cory Cat Blog and talk to Master Gardener Jonesie), know that just because Fall is here it doesn't mean our work in the garden is finished. No, no, no, no!!

The word 'fall' implies that something will drop or go down without support. We all can think of a lot of things that fall, but in this case I'm not talking about food falling in our dishes, or rain falling on our heads (though rain does play a roll in today's topic). I'm talking about LEAVES!! Leaves in the Fall are pretty and when they fall, they are like big colorful snowflakes. Playing in a pile of leaves is also fun, or watching birds digging through leaves. But leaves aren't always welcome and eventually they have to be removed from most places...I'm especially talking about rain gutters. Rain gutters must be kept clean of all debris and leaves. Yep. This is very important otherwise when those big Fall rains start, the water won't run freely down the drain pipes, but will get backed up and will overflow over the gutters and possibly you'll get a waterfall of water on your head if you just happen to go outside at the wrong time and in the wrong place.

As you can see in the above two photos, I am busy making sure that the drains (well, in this case, the DRAIN PIPES) are clean and free of leaves (no, I am NOT SLEEPING, I had something in my eyes when this picture was taken!). This part of the job is very, very demanding - hey! it's a lot of work looking up the drain pipe!! Oh, and no, I don't actually clean them myself, I'm the boss here and it is my job to check, control and snoopervise...it is someone elses' job to actually do the CLEANING!! In fact, after I finish here, I'll have to get up on the roof and check the gutters...maybe I'll save that for another day though since now I'm just plain pooped out and need a nap. Later.

-------
Only 2 days until D-DAY. What is D-DAY? Some of you know, but the rest of you will just have to wait and see....we're not sure ourselves exactly what the D is (though maybe you can guess), all I know is that things are going to be crazy around here...and it won't just be for a little while....I can feel it in my bones and I'm not sure I'm going to like it. Not sure at all.

Wordless Wednesday - butt-ends

Sometimes drastic measures are necessary when there is only a tiny patch of warm sun available.

Tiny's Tuesday - the purple beastie

Despite the fact that Lautrec showed you photos of him hunting down the purple pipe cleaner on his day yesterday, it was I, ME, TINY the first one to discover and maim this dreaded, viscious purple beast!! I only left it where it was so that Lautrec could feel mancatly and have a go at it, too. Aren't I sweet? (Nod your heads up and down now...thank you.)

Weekend Reflections - Tiny Reflecting on Tiny

A couple weeks ago we were sitting in the sun on our balcony and little did we know it but our reflections were watching us. Well, today, I actually caught my reflection watching me. You know what? I don't care...I like my reflection!!

Weekend Reflections is a meme organised by James of Newtown Area Photo. Please see here for reflections from all over the world.

Gardening Thursday

Hello there and welcome to Thursday-in-the-garden for all of you members and non-members of SOFG (see here: Society of Feline Gardeners)!!! Before we get started, I want to clear up what is clearly an absolute MYTH: 'Lautrec never does any work'. I DO work and just to prove it I've decided to invite you on one of my garden 'grounds control' rounds. Believe me, this is NOT an easy job. It includes (but is not limited to) checking for 'trooders' (of all kinds), bitey-thingies, snails and slugs and most important of all, doing grass quality-control. These are all tough jobs...you'll see.

Checking for 'critters' that don't belong here (e.g. mice, mice, slugs/snails and grasshoppers...and mice). Because this was such a wet year, we had a ton o' slugs and Mom can't see them all so she needs my keen eyes to find them...especially since they are always somewhere low to the ground and hiding underneath things so they go unseen if I'm not here to point them out.

Grass quality-control....ICK!! IIIIICCCCKK!
This is an AWFUL batch...we gotta send it back ASAP!!

And here I am making sure that no deer are lurking in the edge of the forest. Those deer are tricky dudes...they think because they are bigger than me that I'm gonna get scared by 'em, but I tell you, if I catch sight of one I am gonna go after it like a lion!! ROAR!! I know, you're thinking that deer are so cute...well it isn't so cute when they chew up all Mom's roses, lillies and other flowers and they also like to chew the bark off of certain young trees and bushes...yep!! You can bet that if I ever catch a deer in our garden that I will be on it's back in a flash!! Zowie!!

So there you have it...that is what I do...not so easy is it? I think it's time for a nap...I'm going back to the house now. See you next week in the garden!!

Tiny's Tuesday - chasing the sun

Summer went by too fast...as of today it is officially FALL!! I still want to laze in the sun like I did in the summer (but then again, I want to laze in the sun ALL YEAR LONG!), but now, whenever I find a nice sunny spot and get all relaxed in it, THE SUN MOVES!! Example: I found this really a good spot; it was so good I even had to defend it against Lautrec taking it over...but then...the sun moved...so I guess I must, too...just a few feet to my left....

Takin' time to stop and smell the flowers

Hi there!! Yep, Fall is DEFINITELY here. On the one paw, I have to say this saddens me because I love to lounge on a cushion in the sun...mmmm! On the other paw, there are so many nice smells in the air now and the birds are all active and chatty again and seem to have lots of fun playing in the fallen leaves (Mom says they aren't really playing, but are looking for buggies in the leaves). Uh-hmm, we have falling leaves already. Really, because we had a wet, short summer so the trees are all dropping leaves NOW!! I can't believe it either, but it's the truth. Anyway, here I am enjoying some of the Japanese Anemone...they are so pretty and what is really cool is the bumblebees and bees love them so, since I love to watch the buggies, I like to hang out around the anemones!! No, don't worry, I don't put the bitie on the buggies!

Gardening Thursday - "How I'm taking a work break' by Tiny

Yes, I KNOW it's Thursday and I KNOW I should be gardening (since Lautrec and I are members of the SOFG* and all), but I'm kinda not in the mood right now and I figured, 'hey, I'm an older gal, I deserve to take a rest when I want to'...so here I am taking a rest. Besides, Lautrec can do some work in the garden - for once - instead of just walking around PRETENDING to work (Yeah, yeah, I've caught on to you big boy).

But I'm not resting very long when something lands next to me...hmmm, it's a feather! So I sniff it...

...then I eat it...well, not really, I just put it in my mouth, but it didn't taste like anything so I spit it out.

Tiny's Tuesday - da Bones!

We don't often get bones...nearly NEVER because in general, bones aren't so good for us...especially chicken bones...they are just bad, but we got a couple of honkin' big bones yesterday so Lautrec and I took our turns at them...mmmm, they were good!! Nom, nom nom!!

Monday 13 September 2010

Lolo Lundi /Lolo Monday

Am I clever? I don't know, I just do what seems logical...for instance, today, Mom gave Tiny and I some leg of lamb bones (you'll see the pictures of Tiny with the bones on her post tomorrow) and, well, since it was necessary to really tug and pull at the meat bits to get them off the bone, I just put my paw on the bone to hold it still...otherwise you have a real tough time getting the meat off. What is so clever about that? Doesn't everyone do that??

Sunday by the Pumpkin Patch

We have an absolutely GINORMOUS pumpkin patch that has taken over and swallowed our very big compost. Seriously guys, we have like 100 miles of pumpkin stems going in all directions and about 30 pumpkins of all sizes from small to very big. Mom just threw a couple of old pumpkins in the compost in the Spring and probably every seed took off and grew in whatever direction it wanted. In the first picture you can see me easily, but in the second picture, you have to search for that bit of a white dot and that is me in the same place, but the picture was taken from another angle...and you still haven't seen it all!! I like to go visit the pumpkin patch...it is cool!! Soon though, the cold will wither the leaves and the pumpkins will be ready to pick and give to our friends to make Jack-o-lanterns!! Woo hoo!! Oh! and BOOO!!
